Parish Groups >
The Women’s Book Group formed in the mid-90s when three
longtime parishioners discovered a mutual desire to nourish their faith,
challenge their minds, and learn more about issues of interest to women in the
Church. They invited others and began gathering to view a video or discuss an
article. Soon they were reading a book each month and meeting regularly for a
lively interchange of ideas.
Reading selections range over Church history and current
issues, theology, and social justice, with a continuing focus on women, and are
both non-fiction and fiction.
As an outgrowth of their reading, the group has sponsored
parish events by and about women:
- Annual celebrations of the feast of St. Mary of
Magdala, with speakers and a prayer service
- Four annual series of presentations on women role
models in the Church
- Lectures by nationally known writers and theologians—
Barbara Reid, Robert McClory, Carolyn Osiek.
- A day retreat
Meetings are held upstairs in the Student Center from 9:15
to 11:15 a.m. on the 4th Sunday of most months. Meetings and book
selections are announced in the parish bulletin and website as well as through
our e-mail list.
Interested women are welcome to attend any or all meetings.
It is desirable but not necessary to have read the book. Most selections are
available at Wild Iris Books, which offers us a 10% discount.

> About this month's book: "In one of the most insightful,
provocative and witty books yet to explore the fascinating relationship
between the Bible and American politics, author Jacques Berlinerblau looks
at how the left, right and everyone in between have used and misused the
Bible to advance their political causes and careers. In this
engaging book, Berlinerblau looks at the recent history of how Scripture
has influenced public policy and at how recent Presidents have employed the
Bible."
